Copy.ai review: standout unlimited plan with one flat rate

Because it seems like AI and AI writing programs, like ChatGPT are all any writer can talk about these days, we decided to take a look at some of the leading AI writing programs out there to help writers and non-writers alike figure out which one is best for them.

We have already reviewed Copymatic, WordHero, Jasper.ai, Rytr, and many of the leading AI text detection tools. Apart from Jasper.ai, many of the programs reviewed are fairly unknown, low budget alternatives to the heavy hitters, like Jasper.ai. Copy.ai falls somewhere between Jasper.ai and the budget options we’ve previously looked at.

Copy.ai was founded in 2020 by entrepreneurs Chris Lu and Paul Yacoubian. Lu and Yacoubian have slowly grown copy.ai into a very reputable name in the world of AI writing programs. They have also leveraged their marketing expertise to grow a community of copy.ai users around the globe.

Here at Humanoid, we commend Lu and Yacoubian for their efforts and think they have created a solid product. Copy.ai has something everyone will be able to use and offers unlimited content creation for one flat price.

On the other hand, we think some aspects of copy.ai’s website and longform tools could be made more user friendly.

Features

Copy.ai boasts an impressive list of over 100 templates for you to create content with. Unlike some other AI writing programs, each of copy.ai’s tools and templates are included in one basic plan.

Copy.ai pros and cons

To make things easy for you, we’ve picked out some of copy.ai’s pros and cons for you to consider before buying.

Pros

Unlimited text for one flat rate

As we discussed in our WordHero review, the days of AI writing programs offering unlimited words are quickly fading. Most programs will charge you based on the number of words you expect to write.

For example, if you want to write 50,000 words with Jasper.ai, your subscription plan will cost you at least $49 per month. The more you want to write, the more you pay. This is the norm with most AI writing programs.

With Copy.ai, a word limit isn’t something you have to worry about. For one flat price, you can use all 100+ of copy.ai’s tools to write as much as your heart desires.

There’s something for everyone

Many AI writing programs are clearly geared towards some types of writers and not others. Usually a quick glance at the list of tools and templates will tell you who the AI writing program is catered to.

Copy.ai is geared towards everyone. Copywriters will find use in copy.ai’s Blog Post Wizard, and other blog writing tools. Professionals and small business owners can use any of copy.ai’s email, promotional, or SEO tools. Aspiring creatives will enjoy the short story and song lyrics tools.

Those I listed are just a taste of what you can do with copy.ai. Another plus in this area is that copy.ai is committed to growth. If you don’t see a tool that can help you, you can make a request with copy.ai that they create a new tool.

Cons

Copy.ai’s user interface isn’t very intuitive

If we’re being kind to copy.ai, we’d say that Copy.ai’s user interface could be improved. If we weren’t being kind, we’d say copy.ai’s user interface can be confusing and sometimes very tedious (more on the second point later).

Copy.ai’s main page contains many contradictions and repeated information that makes it a little hard to look at. One of our major gripes is with how copy.ai defines tools and templates.

Copy.ai pricing get started

On the left side of copy.ai’s welcome page are a list of tools categorized by copy.ai for your convenience. Cool, no problems so far. Things get confusing when you click the templates button.

About half of the “tools” are listed under the templates as well. This makes us wonder what the difference is. Between the “tools” also listed as “templates” there is no difference between them.

If there is no difference, we have to wonder why there are two categories at all. We don’t know the answer to why there are two categories.

What we do know is that the effect of there being two categories makes for a confusing user experience that we think can be improved upon.

Copy.ai can be tedious for longform writers

Our first and second cons are related. We think copy.ai can be a little hard to understand for new users, and that is especially true for using copy.ai’s marquee longform writing tool.

With Copy.ai’s “Blog Post Wizard” you’re supposed to be able to write full blog posts in seconds. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

Instead of being able to enter a prompt containing your blog title and a few subsection ideas, you are required to go through a tedious four step process starting with your headlines and some keywords.

Then you have to review the outline copy.ai generates for you. From there, you have to review the talking points copy.ai created for your outline subsections. Finally, after all that, copy.ai will generate a blog post for you.

Compared to copy.ai’s competitors, this process is a very lengthy one that should definitely be streamlined.

How does copy.ai work?

Copy.ai uses OpenAI’s Generative Pre-Trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3). GPT-3 is the basis for many of the programs you’re probably already familiar with.

If you’ve used ChatGPT, you’ve used GPT-3. The program is also the backbone of the vast majority of other AI writing programs, like Copymatic, WordHero, Jasper.ai, and Rytr.

GPT-3 was created by OpenAI, which is an AI company founded by a group of Silicon Valley investors, including Twitter C.E.O. Elon Musk, in 2015. OpenAI’s GPT-3 AI text generation model is the most advanced on the market.

OpenAI are currently working on their next text generation model, GPT-4.  As soon as GPT-4 becomes available, expect copy.ai to incorporate it in its software.

Pricing

As we discussed in the pros and cons list, one major positive of Copy.ai is that they offer unlimited words for one flat rate.

Copy.ai pricing

While there is only one Copy.ai plan you can purchase, you can choose to sign up for a monthly or yearly subscription. Yearly subscriptions will be at a discounted rate compared to paying for 12 months through a monthly subscription plan.

Languages

Copy.ai is fully compatible with 26 languages, meaning you can use those 26 languages as input languages or receive outputs in those languages. Unfortunately for non-English writers, languages besides English aren’t included in copy.ai’s free trial.

The full list of languages included in your copy.ai paid subscription includes:

  • German
  • English (Britain)
  • English (American)
  • French

  • Bulgarian
  • Czech
  • Danish
  • Estonian
  • Finnish
  • Greek
  • Hungarian
  • Latvian
  • Lithuanian
  • Romanian
  • Slovak
  • Slovenian
  • Swedish

Free Trial

Copy.ai gives potential users a seven-day free trial. Unlike most online free trials, you aren’t required to put in your credit card information when you sign up for Copy.ai’s free trial. Copy.ai’s free trial is limited in some ways though.

With a free trial, you won’t be able to input or produce text in any language besides English. You’ll also be limited to just one seat, meaning you can’t share your free trial account with anyone else. They will have to create their own account.

WordPress Plugin

Copy.ai doesn’t currently offer a WordPress plugin. They do have a Google Chrome extension allowing you to use copy.ai at sites like Facebook and some others.

Final thoughts

Copy.ai’s relatively low price, unlimited text generation, and sheer number of tools and templates makes it a solid choice. Copy.ai would be an especially good choice for teams of writers producing lots of short form content.

While we think Copy.ai is a good product, there is a lot of room for improvement when it comes to its user interface and how efficient some of its tools are.

Copy.ai review final score:

Copy.ai is one of the few programs offering unlimited content creation and has over 100 tools for all kinds of writers. Copy.ai could be a bit tedious for some longform writers, but its outputs are as good as you will find anywhere. For the price, Copy.ai is worth it, despite its drawbacks.
