WordHero review: the creative writer’s budget AI writing assistant

Since AI writing tools entered the mainstream a few months ago, after OpenAI released their ChatGPT tool to the public, we at Humanoid decided to take a look at some of the paid AI writing tools available.

We have already reviewed Copymatic (review here). Now we are taking a look at another under the radar writing software, WordHero

WordHero is a good choice for creatives and small business owners. It offers many tools geared towards helping writers make their ideas a reality.

However, WordHero falls short of its competitors because of its limited longform content generation options.

Despite this, WordHero is a good option for prolific creatives due to it not having a limit on the amount of content you can produce.

Features

With a WordHero subscription, you will have access to 78 unique tools. The types of tools offered by WordHero vary. Some do simple things, like one which will write a title for your YouTube video. Others are more complex, like WordHero’s Longform Editor tool.

Pros and cons

Pros

Good for brainstorming, short form articles, and creative writers

If you can’t tell from the list above, many of WordHero’s tools are great for turning small ideas into big ones. Tools like WordHero’s “Book Titles,” “Blog Topics,” and “Marketing Ideas” tools can turn brief descriptions into concrete ideas for you to build on.

The number of tools geared towards fictional and creative writing sets WordHero apart from its competitors. Along with the “Book Titles” tool I already mentioned, WordHero also has tools to help you write songs, short stories, and analogies.

For more traditional copywriters, WordHero is a useful tool as well. The “Blog Outline” tool can be used to provide a structure for your piece that you might be having trouble creating by yourself.

As a writer, some of the hardest things are writing catchy introductions and sleek conclusions. Whether you are a creative or traditional writer, WordHero’s “Blog Intros” and “Blog Conclusions” tools will be an enormous help to you.

Allows you to dictate the tone of your writing

One other notable feature of WordHero is the ability to include your desired tone in your prompt. For example, if you are using WordHero for your blog, you might want to make sure what you write is not too technical or academic sounding.

With WordHero, you can specify for WordHero to generate text with a “casual” or “enthusiastic” tone. There are also specific tools, like the “Tone Changer” and “Descriptive Expression” tools, that help you change the tone of your own work.

The one drawback of WordHero’s tone feature, is that there is no set list of tones to choose from, so it will take some trial and error to get the WordHero to produce text with your desired tone.

Cons

WordHero is an inefficient tool for longform writing

Like many AI software tools, there are many tools to write large passages of text for you. For example, the “Blog Paragraph” and “News Paragraphs” tools allow you to get a full paragraph of text from one simple prompt and some keywords.

The problem with WordHero compared to its competitors is that there are no tools that allow you to generate large amounts of text quickly. As I mentioned above, there are some tools that will write paragraphs for you, but one or two paragraphs is about as much text as you can get from one click.

WordHero’s “Longform Editor” supposedly addresses this concern, but even that tool falls short. The Longform Editor can be found at the top of the screen. It is labeled “Editor” with a pencil icon (see below).

WordHero's longform editor
With the Longform Editor, you can create full articles with just a simple outline. However, the process of doing this is tedious.

To add text to your outline, you have to click the paragraph writer tool (the rocket ship icon) and wait for the text to populate under the subheading. Like other WordHero tools, the most text you will get is about a paragraph. You then have to hit the paragraph writer tool for each subheading.

If you are not happy with the short amount of text created and you want more, you can then click the “write more” tool (pencil icon) to add more text under your selected subheading. This process is slow and the additional text created is often disjointed or repetitive.

I would not recommend WordHero for writers wanting an AI tool that generates large amounts of high-quality text quickly.

How does WordHero work?

WordHero uses OpenAI’s Generative Pre-Trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3)

OpenAI is an artificial intelligence company founded by Silicon Valley investors, including Twitter C.E.O. Elon Musk, in 2015. The GPT-3 AI text generation model is the most advanced on the market to date.

OpenAI is the most high profile and cutting edge AI company on the planet. They are partnered with Microsoft and currently working on their next text generation model, GPT-4.  We expect that GPT-4 will be incorporated into WordHero whenever possible after its release sometime next year.

Pricing

Unlike many of its competitors, WordHero’s pricing structure is not dependent on the amount of text you create. WordHero allows unlimited text generation for one flat price.

You can pay either per month or for a yearly subscription up front. Yearly subscriptions will be at a discounted rate compared to paying for 12 months through a monthly subscription plan.

Additionally, because WordHero is still in its early access phase, they are currently offering a discount for people who subscribe right now. Monthly plans cost just $49/month (down from $99/month). You can buy a year-long subscription for $348 (down from $1188/year), which breaks down to $29/month.

WordHero offers a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Final thoughts

WordHero is a great tool for creatives and for writers who struggle with brainstorming. Despite its limitations, WordHero’s unlimited plans and early access deal makes it a good price for prolific writers looking for a bargain.

WordHero uses OpenAI’s GPT-3 text generation model. This is the cream of the crop of AI text generation models, so users can be sure they are using the best of the best.

WordHero is not up to the standard of more premium tools, like Jasper or Copymatic, but it is cheaper, uses the same technology, and offers unlimited text generation.

WordHero review final score:

WordHero is an easy to use and affordable option for AI writing assistants. Creative writers will get more use out of WordHero than others, but it is a good choice for all kinds of writers.
